UPDATE: Confusion over ebola

UPDATE: 08:13 THURSDAY 14 NOVEMBER 2019

The latest information coming out of the health ministry is that there is no real ebola case reported in the country.

According to sources, the ‘news’ which caused panic on social media last night was a simulation of a created senario from the cross border health committee currently having a meeting in Ficksburg.

They wanted to assess Lesotho’s Ebola preparedness and response.

But for the record, the minister of health did indeed confirm the ebola news to theReporter.

PREVIOUS REPORT

The minister of health, Nkaku Kabi, has confirmed that the first ebola case in Lesotho has been reported at Motebang Hospital in Leribe.

In a brief interview with theReporter on Wednesday evening, Kabi could not provide further detail except that the patient is a Mosotho.

Ebola is a virus that causes severe bleeding, organ failure and can lead to death.

Humans may spread the virus to other humans through contact with bodily fluids such as blood.

Briefly, the patient is a Mosotho lady who had contact with a friend from Ebola endemic part of DRC in Johannesburg South Africa. Both of them developed symptoms suggestive of Ebola. Nurses at Maputsoe border gate suspected Ebola in the patient who was then transported in an Ambulance to Motebang Hospital TB isolation ward where blood & urine samples were taken to virology lab in Johannesburg, which just confirmed positive Ebola results.
