Couple nabbed for fraud

A 39-year old man from St. Monica who stays at Ha Mabote, Mofalali Aupa Lebeko and his wife ‘Mapontso Lebeko (36) appeared before Maseru magistrate court last Thursday on charges of fraud.

The couple were granted bail of M1000 each person, which they paid and are expected to appear before the court again on October 14.

According to police, Mofalali Lebeko is a former home affairs official in the passport office department. It is alleged that he had approached people in unnamed villages, offering them jobs at the home affairs ministry and demanding they pay between M2,500 and M4,000.

Police allege that the payments were made through Ecocash and M-Pesa, and that he was found in possession of fraudulent scanned documents signed by other officials.

The couple is believed to have amassed M57, 650 through this scam.
