The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) will hold by elections for 44 electoral divisions and constituencies in July this year.
In an interview with theReporter, IEC’s public relations officer, Tuoe Hantši said the commission is currently finalising the budgeting and planning on how they will go about the elections. Its plan is to hold local government and National Assembly by-elections concurrently.
“We have had the experience of holding such by-elections at the same time in the past. We did it in Thaba Phechela, Thaba Moea and Thupa Kubu, and we are very much convinced that it is also wise to hold the upcoming by-elections concurrently.
“Since the National Assembly Electoral Act section 38 (2) constituency elections may not be held within six months preceding the dissolution of parliament pending general elections, when we hold the by-elections in June or July, that will give us ample time before parliament is dissolved for the general elections which we foresee being held in September or October 2022,” Hantši said.
