Lesotho marks World Water Day

‘Mantšali Phakoana

Lesotho joined the rest of the globe to commemorate World Water Day on Friday. This year’s theme is: “Water for Peace.”

World Water Day is marked annually on March 22, as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.

This year’s commemoration started with a demonstration at Masianokeng Hydropower Station.

Speaking on behalf of the minister of natural resources, Mohlomi Moleko, the principal secretary in the ministry, Relebohile Lebeta noted that this year’s theme was a reminder of the critical importance of water in fostering peace and sustainable development within communities and across borders.

Lebeta expressed the importance of promoting access to water and forging partnerships to build bridges and pave the way for a more harmonious and prosperous society that lives in peace with itself and its neighbours.

“In a world where water scarcity can bring about tensions and conflicts, we recognize the critical importance of leveraging on our water resources as a catalyst for peace, corporation and sustainable development.

“Let us reaffirm our commitment to harnessing the transformative power of water, to build bridges of understanding, and cooperation as water knows no boundaries, she noted.
