Shungu drops Skuta Baba remix featuring Lesotho talent

Lesotho-based artist Yemba Shungu has released a remix of the popular track Skuta Baba by KwaZulu-Natal-based Woodblock DJs, bringing a unique local twist to the hit song.

Shungu, a 31-year old originally from Wembonyama in the Democratic Republic of Congo, now resides in Thetsane, Maseru.

The remix project was inspired by a tip from colleagues in Johannesburg, who mentioned that Woodblock DJs were seeking artists to create remixed versions of their track.

Driven by a desire to spotlight the musical talent in Lesotho, Shungu handpicked a group of up-and-coming rappers, each selected for their distinctive styles. His goal: to showcase the energy and potential of Lesotho’s hip-hop scene on a broader platform.

“This initiative is not just about the remix; it’s about putting Lesotho on the musical map,” Shungu explained. “There’s incredible talent here, and it’s time the world took notice.”

After recording the track, Shungu reached out to the original creators to share the final version. He emphasised the importance of their approval, ensuring they were not only satisfied but thrilled with the outcome.

“Collaboration was key. I wanted the DJs to feel a sense of pride and ownership in the project. Their input was crucial to making it a success,” he noted.

Looking ahead, Shungu is now working on a music video for the remix, which will be released on the Woodblock DJs’ YouTube channel. With their strong following on the platform, he believes the video could generate widespread attention and even go viral.

“A well-received video could open doors to international recognition,” he added. “It’s an exciting time.”

Since the remix’s release, the response has been overwhelmingly positive.

“The reception has been incredible,” Shungu said. “I’m truly grateful for the support we’ve received for the Lesotho remix. The video will be out soon, and I believe audiences will be amazed by its quality.”
