King Letsie III officially received the Global Water Partnership (GEP) Presidential Global Water Changemakers Award at a ceremony in Maseru.
The award recognises visionary leadership and high-level commitment to advancing water security on the African continent and globally. It honours King Letsie III’s leadership in championing the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP) as a mode of transboundary cooperation for peace, resilience and sustainable development.
According to a government statement, the award is also a tribute to Lesotho’s steadfast commitment to partnership and progress, recognising that the country’s upstream-downstream cooperation with South Africa has stood as a continental exemplar for peacebuilding and shared responsibility.
The event also marked the 39th anniversary of the signing of the LHWP in 1986, a historic milestone in regional cooperation and sustainable development.
In his acceptance remarks, the King Letsie III reaffirmed Lesotho’s enduring dedication to regional cooperation, environmental stewardship, and sustainable water resource management.
