Aura Run Club (ARC) will host its highly anticipated Blanket Run Edition in Maseru onSaturday, aiming to inspire, empower and unite people while promoting a strong culture of health, wellness and community engagement.
In Lesotho, a blanket is more than just a piece of fabric. It represents identity, protection and pride. It is also practical clothing, especially during the country’s cold winters. This cultural significance is the inspiration behind ARC’s Blanket Run, an event that blends running, fashion, heritage and community into one unique experience.
ARC President, Brand Architect and Community Leader, Dr Khiba Moiloa, said the club is about more than fitness.
“Our club is about health, community and lifestyle. Fashion is a big part of lifestyle, so we wanted to showcase fashion while incorporating our heritage and culture,” he said.
Moiloa explained that the concept draws inspiration from Basotho ancestors who often travelled long distances wrapped in blankets during harsh winter conditions.
“Our forefathers used to run in blankets during the winter seasons as they went about their daily activities. We want participants to experience that feeling and connect with that part of our heritage,” he recounted.
He noted that the Blanket Run bridges two worlds — a sport whose fashion culture is largely Western-influenced and a culture where the blanket remains a powerful symbol of identity.
“By bringing our heritage to the start line, we are redefining what running looks like in Lesotho,” said Moiloa.
Participants can expect a lively community atmosphere filled with entertainment and activities. Following the run, the event will feature yoga sessions, massages, games, gym activities, a live podcast, and a performance by local artist PitsoRahMakhula. Attendees will also enjoy breakfast and music provided by DJ Malome Charles.
According to Moiloa, the Blanket Run is designed to appeal to young people by combining fashion, lifestyle, social media, content creation and community engagement.
“Our message is simple: there are many ways to have fun, and running can be one of them,” he pointed out.
ARC has partnered with Bonono, a renowned fashion house, to design exclusive ARC blankets that will be showcased during the event.
Moiloa admitted that one of the biggest challenges in organising the event has been uncertainty about its success. However, he said the overwhelming support received so far has been encouraging.
“What God places on your heart is worth pursuing. He will lead you to places you never imagined possible. Great things take time to build, so patienceis an important virtue,” he stated.
Looking ahead, Moiloa said ARC’s long-term vision is to grow the Blanket Run into an internationally recognised event that attracts participants from around the world to experience Lesotho’s unique running culture.
The club also hopes to nurture young athletes into future marathon stars while continuing to support charitable initiatives within communities.
“We have many exciting runs planned for the future. For now, our invitation is simple: make time to participate. It’s good for your physical health and mental wellbeing,” he added.
