Car dealer finally nabbed

The owner of a local car dealership-cum-clearing and forwarding company is reported to have finally been arrested, more than one year after skipping the country to escape criminal charges.

Police spokesperson Supt Mpiti Mopeli confirmed that Phoka Mofubetsoana was apprehended on Saturday and was released into the custody of his legal representative on Monday.

According to media reports, Mofubetsoana of Phoka Clearing and Forwarding Agency fled the country last year after failing to deliver cars to several clients who had already paid for vehicle importation services.

His flight had sparked fears that his clients could lose as much as M1million they had invested for the procurement of used cars from Japan.

This prompted the Import Car Dealers Association (ICDA) to distance itself from all clearing and forwarding agencies who have in recent years operated as car dealers.

More details to follow.
