Volunteers making a dream come true

By Neo Kolane

A remote rural settlement with a population of about 300 in Ha Sekantṧi, will soon see their dream come true when a learning centre will be constructed.

Ha Sekantši village was established around 1925. It is located in the ‘Maletsunyane constituency and ‘Makhoalipana community council in the Maseru district.

The learning centre will cater for the preschool, junior primary, herders evening classes, sewing school and the first rural photography school in Lesotho. The nearest school is a two-hour distance from the village.

Now 10 men and women from Lerotholi Polytechnic joined the people of Ha Sekantṧi on an intiative to connect the village to construct the road on July 9. Later, they were joined by the Lesotho Red Cross.

The team joins a large contingent led by JusticeKalebephotography’s carried out by volunteers, including among others, Lesotho Work Camps Association, Possible Dreams Foundation, Lesotho Jeep Legends and many friends of Ha Sekantṧi.

Faculty advisor to the volunteers, Thaba Chakela said that the first attempt was simple as they used the skills learned in the classroom. The volunteers provided technical support to the community as they put finishing touches onto the road that is being constructed in an unprecedented collaboration between the ministry of local government and chieftainship -Lesotho, the Makhoalipana local council and the community.

“During the first two weeks the community bore the fuel expenses while the council provided a heavy earthmoving equipment.

By end of July there were 20 volunteers who worked with the community members in the construction of the learning centre, installation of water pipes and building of household gardens

“This volunteer drive would not be possible without the gracious confidence of the student volunteers from Lerotholi Polytechnic management, the ever willing volunteers from the Lesotho Work Camps Association and the stalwarts of humanitarian work, the Lesotho Red Cross,” Chakela said.
