Tumelo Forlan Nthane is a beekeeper who is fascinated not by profit, but the healing properties of honey such as boosting the immune system, reducing inflammation and lowering the risks of heart disease.
In a recent interview with theReporter, Nthane said the invaluable knowledge he acquired from researching on bees is what inspired him to start the business in 2022.
“I learned that bees are nature’s doctors. The concoction of nectar they collect from different plants is actually a formidable elixir. Apart from being a medicine in its own right, honey is also a sweetener and flavourant.
“Take raw sunflower honey for instance; it is considered as one of nature’s true superfoods and its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. With a range of health-boosting metabolites, organic sunflower honey can be considered a healthier alternative to sweetening food and drinks,” Nthane said.
He recalled that since he does not have enough bee hives, he decided to do some research on where he can source honey. That is when he came across raw honey.
“I learned of its benefits and decided to try it out,” Nthane noted.
Most of his clients are people who are highly health-conscious and prefer raw honey over ordinary sugar.
The apiarist works with his partner (spouse) who he said has always been supportive.
He said the main challenge he encounters in his business is people close to him who demand a discount on his products.
He enthused that business is doing well, as he has clients that purchase the honey in large quantities.
Thirty-three-year old Nthane studied Human Resources at Central University of Technology in Bloemfontein. He stays at Naleli, in Maseru district. Apart from selling raw sunflower honey, he works in at a construction company as assistant health and safety officer.
Nthane has words of advice for other entrepreneurs: “Don’t get distracted, never tell yourself that you need to be the biggest brand in the whole world. Start by working on what you need at the present moment and then what you need to do tomorrow. So, set yourself manageable targets,” he urged
