Govt lifts poultry imports ban

‘Mantšali Phakoana

Government has lifted the ban on importation of frozen chicken and fertile eggs from South Africa.

However, the ban on poultry birds imports from the neigbouring country remains in force.

This was announced at a press conference on Friday by the minister of agriculture, food security and nutrition, Thabo Mofosi,.

Government had imposed a blanket ban on poultry products on October 11, 2023, following outbreaks of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), specifically the H5N1 and H7N6 strains, in various provinces of South Africa such as Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, Free State and Kwazulu-Natal, during September and October last year.

Mofosi noted his ministry and its South African counterparts were yet to announce specific producers where the said products could be sourced.

He added that there would also be need for the SA government to provide certificates from authorised suppliers.
