European Film Festival returns

The European Union delegation to Lesotho and Alliance Française de Maseru will tomorrow hold a press briefing to announce the return of the European Film Festival.

Films will be screened at four venues namely;Alliance Française de Maseru, National University of Lesotho, Café What? and the Hub. The festival will run from 13 November 2024 to 19 November.

Funded by the European Union, the annual festival will showcase a diverse range of European and local films. This year’s programme includes European films such as ‘Mermaids don’t cry’, ‘Rafiki’, and many more. They explore a variety of themes including social justice, identity, and human resilience.

The opening film, “A Wish for My Daughter,” produced by Lesotho’s GEM Institute, delves into inheritance rights and the role of women in Basotho society.

Additionally, two films by the Lesotho Rap Archives will be screened. “Lerabeng la Mahlanya” explores the musical journeys of contemporary acts, Mahlanya and Morena Leraba, who blend traditional famo music with modern influences.

“We Were Always Here – A Lesotho Hip Hop Story” delves into the history and impact of hip-hop culture in Lesotho.

This initiative aims to enhance accessibility and engagement with film enthusiasts nationwide, highlighting the EU’s long-term commitment to cinema production in Lesotho and expanding access to films for a wider audience, including children and rural populations.

The festival is funded by the EU and has received additional financial support from Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Germany, France, Italy, Ireland, Poland, and Spain.
