60th Independence anniversary celebrations launched

Government has  launched the country’s 60th Independence anniversary celebrations, unveiling a year-long programme to promote national unity, patriotism, tourism and economic growth under the theme “Honouring our Past, Shaping our Future.”

The celebrations will be held in all 10 districts, giving Basotho an opportunity to participate through activities that celebrate the nation’s history, culture and achievements while inspiring future generations.

Speaking at the launch yesterday , the Minister of Tourism, Sports, Arts and Culture,  Stephen Mputi, said the anniversary provides an opportunity to reflect on Lesotho’s journey since independence, honour the sacrifices of the nation’s founding fathers and mothers, and celebrate the resilience and achievements of Basotho.

Mputi said the celebrations also serve as a call to shape the country’s future through economic growth, social inclusion, innovation, good governance and sustainable development while strengthening national identity and encouraging unity.

Government has approved a  programme of activities to be implemented throughout the year including a National Inaugural Prayer, a Flag Hoisting Campaign,Prime Minister’s Dialogue, National Anthem Campaign and the creation of a National Independence song.

Other activities will include district celebrations, youth empowerment initiatives, educational and historical awareness campaigns, tourism promotion, sporting events, community development projects and national dialogues aimed at involving citizens across the country.
