Cash-in-transit crew robbed

There was momentary panic at Maseru Mall this morning as armed robbers ambushed a cash-in-transit security guard and made off with a case containing an undisclosed amount of money.

According to eye witnesses, the security guard had just exited one of the banks operating at the mall, and was accosted by the four assailants on his way to a G4S Security Company cash in transit vehicle waiting outside.

The suspects sped off with the security guards in hot pursuit, and ensuing high speed chase saw the thieves commandeering no less than three vehicles, two of which they abandoned in the vicinity after collisions with the security company armoured vehicle. This after their getaway car was damaged in an exchange of fire with the security crew.

The visibly shaken owner of one of the hijacked vehicles said the gunmen forcibly forced her to surrender her car. One of the robbers, who is estimated to be in his late teens, was shot but managed to escape along with his gang.

A Nedbank employee at the scene decline to relate what had happened, but the bank’s head of marketing ‘Mamoabi Phori told theReporter she was not yet aware of the incident and promised to give out details once she had all the facts.
