Nurses association withdraws from mother body

By Kefiloe Kajane

The Coalition of Health Professionals Associations (HPA) today confirmed receiving a letter from the Lesotho Nurses Association (LNA) notifying it of the association’s termination of its membership of the coalition.

HPA says there is no explanation for LNA’s withdrawal, except that the move is due to ‘unforeseen circumstances’.

HPA suspects the possible reason as the salary struggle at Queen ‘Mamohato Memorial Hospital (QMMH), but says signs were seen earlier when the coalition rebuked some of LNA executive members for collecting donations intended for the coalition, and keeping them for themselves.

“During the struggle of health professionals – commonly remembered as for PPE and risk allowances – it emerged that the next struggle will be over QMMH staff members’ salaries. This was done with all HPA member associations working together harmoniously and tirelessly, utilizing our various strengths to see to it that health professionals got what was due to them,” read an HPA statement.
