Lesotho invited to COP26

By ‘Majirata Latela

The Prime Minister Dr Moeketsi Majoro yesterday received a letter from the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Boris Johnson inviting him to attend the World leader’s summit on issues of climate change to be held in November 2021.

The UK will host the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties.

When delivering the letter, British High Commissioner to Lesotho Anne Macro said one of the pressing issues facing the international communities nowadays is climate change and should be dealt with by all countries.

“I want to thank you for your leadership here in Lesotho about this important issue and I know how strongly you feel about protecting the environment and the importance of doing that especially to people of Lesotho who are dependent on agriculture,”

Receiving the invitation, Majoro said Lesotho is affected significantly by climate change. He said in January the country experienced severe rains which caused a lot of damage which Lesotho is trying to recover from financially.

“We do not contribute significantly to climate change but we suffer seriously from the effects of climate change and COP26 is an opportunity for Lesotho to put her issues on the agenda, thus our acceptance to participate in the summit,” Majoro said.

Reports have indicated that many developing countries are experiencing the impacts of climate change – including flooding, drought and extreme temperatures. These countries are also facing challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting financial pressures.
