LDF joins peacekeeping mission in Mozambique

By Teboho Serutla

Lesotho Defence Force army members will be among the soldiers from the SADC Member States to be deployed in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province to deal with insurgency.

The deployment is a follow-up on SADC Heads of State and Governments’ special summit that took place recently in Maputo, Mozambique to assist in peace-keeping efforts.

The special meeting was meant to discuss the way forward in dealing with the insurgency that has rocked the province resulting in killing of many people while others have fled the areas to take refuge in other places.

The meeting agreed that the SADC regional countries should collaborate in order to help Mozambique out of the crisis.

Further details concerning the deployment of Lesotho army were still not so clear at the time of going to press. But the ministry of defence and national security will issue such details once all the procedures in regard to the deployment are complete.

Other ministries and departments will also support with the civilian component which is still under discussions. At the time, preparations are being undertaken and are to be announced when all is done.

Nearly 3 000 people have been killed and almost 800 000, half of whom are children, have been forced to flee their homes in a gas-rich Cabo Delgado province since the conflict began in 2017.
