Tug-of-war at IEMS

By Neo Kolane

The management, director and senior registrar of the Institute of Extra Mural Studies (IEMS) is locked in talks with the heads of the two departments that insist on students writing examinations physically.

The two departments are mass communication and management – both business entrepreneurship and diploma in management.

The students, on the other hand, prefer to write the examinations online. IEMS is the Maseru campus of the National University of Lesotho. Examinations were scheduled to start yesterday, but did not go ahead as planned due to the stand-off between the students and the school.

Addressing the students yesterday, the chairperson of Students Representative Council (SRC) Thato Diaho Matsepe explained that the SRC held talks with the management of the school, the senior registrar and director of IEMS.

Matsepe said in the meeting, the heads of the two departments claimed students copy from textbooks and the internet when writing examinations online, leading to their work being plagiarism.

“As the SRC it is our responsibility to seek clarification from the powers that be, regarding how students prepare themselves for examinations. We were initially informed exams would be written online. So we are baffled by the sudden unilateral turn around. We insist that the examinations be conducted online,” Matsepe said.
