Is Lesotho ready for electric cars?

By Neo Kolane

In two to three years from now, the Southern African region needs to prepare for the emerging electric cars on their roads.

The chief executive officer of Road Fund, Nkekeletse Makara, told theReporter that somehow Road Fund needs to find means to power charge such vehicles “because they will be using the roads sponsored with the Road Fund finances for maintenance.

Makara said if the introduction of such cars will impact on the road levy, the southern African region will need to prepare for the vehicles to take to the road.

“Tolling within the country needs to be a solution now because one of our ways we collect revenue is the road maintenance levy which we get from petrol and diesel. It is soon going to face problems because we have electric cars emerging which will not use petrol,” he said.

He said the invention will require legislation to be in place to allow for the introduction of the new car makes.

Several developed countries have already introduced electric vehicles on their roads as a measure to fight climate change by reducing carbon emissions.
