Bus, taxi operators abandon strike

By Neo Kolane

Lesotho public transport operators announced the withdrawal of the national stay away set for today.

This was revealed at a press conference that was held by the operators on Tuesday this week by Maseru Region Transport Operators chairman Mokete Jonase on behalf of the operators.

Jonase said a 30 percent transport increase has been agreed upon but the ministry of transport experts will do a research on how this hike will affect other sectors.

He said that the government has agreed to sponsor their study tour to South Africa, Botswana and Eswatini to assess running of public transport.

He revealed that the new transport fees will be effective from June 1 2020.

This follows their previous statement on April 6 revealing their kick-start campaign to lobby for support from their membership, where the operators said their intention to head for the strike happens after they accused the transport ministry of failing to heed their web of demands.

The stalemate was prompted by failed talks between the ministry of transport and the public transport operators in which they demand a 30 percent hike of transport fares. But the talks have not been fruitful triggering a planned no-public transport services
