Stained rands cause panic

By Mothusi Thabane

The Central Bank of Lesotho has issued a warning after dye-stained money was found circulating in the country, sparking misgivings among both consumers and retailers.

A statement by Nedbank Lesotho also warned consumers and retailers to be cautious about the Rand, adding that “these compromised notes may not be detectable to the naked eye.”

The public was therefore warned from accepting or using dye-stained SA banknotes in circulation as a means of payment.
Consumers were also notified that the stained bank notes will not be exchanged at the Central Bank or other banks.

The Central Bank warning left both consumers and retailers worried, believing that the Rand had become a white elephant.

“I was worried that I would get my salary in Rands, but my colleagues told me we only get paid in Maloti,” said one woman after buying groceries.
