Road Fund to increase spot fine devices

Neo Kolane

The Road Fund says it is working to increase the number of electronic spot fine (eSpot Fine) devices during this 2023/24 financial year.

About 80 devices are currently being used by the police throughout the country and more will be purchased with the availability of funds.

This was revealed during a recent meeting between the Road Fund and the Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS).

Delivering his official opening remarks, chief executive officer of the Road Fund, Nkekeletse Makara, said the review meeting was long overdue as the system has been fully operational since September 2019.

He noted that beside collecting funds, the fines aim to restore order through compliance with the country traffic laws.

On his part, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Tšeliso Moerane expressed his appreciation to the Road Fund for donating the devices.

He said that since introduction of the electronic spot fine system, traffic police officers had shown enthusiasm in doing their work.

A total of 34 000 tickets were issued by police for various traffic offences during 2022 and of these, only 22 906 of them paid while 11 104 remain outstanding.

Road Fund head of corporate communications, Phumla Moleko told theReporter in an interview last week that the two parties agreed to convene at least once a year to review progress. Activities will include training sessions on the eSpot Fine system, awareness campaigns for road users on traffic laws and related offences, as well as establishing the number of devices needed, she said.
