Prime Minister Sam Matekane yesterday briefed regional leaders on the progress of national reforms and the political and security situation in Lesotho.
He was speaking at the 43rd Summit of SADC Heads of State and Government in Luanda, Angola.
The meeting was held under the theme: “Human and financial capital: The drivers for sustainable industrialisation of the SADC region.”
Matekane told the summit that Basotho had through elections demanded the country’s political leaders to put behind their differences aside and promptly address the pressing and paramount economic and social challenges facing the country.
These included poverty, unemployment, under-development and access to services, particularly health services.
“To this end, as the leadership of the Kingdom of Lesotho, we have expressed our commitment to address these challenges by ushering in the Lesotho that Basotho want and indeed the Lesotho that Basotho deserve,” he said.
“We are cognisant of the fact that in order to achieve these noble objectives, we need to change the way we do things. It is in this context that we reiterate our unwavering political commitment to the National Reforms process.”
Matekane added that the reforms were a national priority and his government has a reponsibility to ensure they are carried forward and finalised.
He noted that the government strongly believes it is through this programe that a new era of peace and stability could be achieved in Lesotho.
