Habitat hands over 21 houses

By Seleoe Nonyane

Habitat for Humanity Lesotho has commemorated World Habitat Day, handing over 21 newly-built houses to needy families at Mataoeng village in Brakfontein, Mohale’s Hoek.

Habitat for Humanity Lesotho is a Christian non-profit Organisation working towards eradicating poverty housing in Lesotho, focusing on the vulnerable groups which may include orphans and vulnerable children, older persons and with disabilities since 2001.

Handing over one of the houses to physically disabled Lilian Monyane and her daughter Limpho, the organisation’s national director, ‘Mathato Moreboli, said they came to theMonyane family’s rescue after realising theyneeded a better home.

She explained that that theme for this year’s Habitat Day is “Resilient urban economies. Cities as drivers of growth and recovery.”

The day was set aside by the United Nations to reflect on the basic right to adequate shelter for all.

It is also intended to shape the future of cities and towns across the globe.

Moreboli further noted that urban dwellers must be able to find means of living amidst the declining economic activity.

The world’s economy fell due to the Covid-19 pandemic which drastically affected many households.

“The cost of living became really expensive due to the pandemic and this was a lesson for everyone to find other ways of surviving in the face of such crisis,” she added.
