Year of fun

By Kabelo Mollo

Festive 23 has come and gone. Sadly, not a single trifle was enjoyed by the author of this column, but I have come to accept that life is not fair and just has to keep moving. I hope everyone enjoyed a restful holiday period with loved ones, and that we return with the proverbial bit between our teeth.

To this end, I see the opposition have come back from a retreat in the most stunning part of the country Sehlabathebe with a new scheme to oust the government and Prime Minister. These career politicians continue to try to destabilise the country, for their own gain.

I wonder at what point they’ll simply accept their fate and keep it moving? It’s a little disconcerting, but Also predictable that after the least failed attempt they are back at it. I said in a previous column this would be the case, and they haven’t disappointed. But here’s the thing, their eagerness to topple this government is having an adverse effect on their credibility.

The government of the day is not hitting the high notes that were expected of it. There is little to show from the revolution we were promised a little over a year ago. Instead, we are seeing a lot more of the same. The lights are bright and shiny.

The potholes were filled but Aside from that I’m not really sure what other landmarks to point to. LNDC has bailed out Enrich (and left us wondering what we have to do to earn such a thing) but many major problems persist. The most prominent one over the December period was the passport saga.

It continues with barely a peep from the powers that be. Unbelievable that so long in to their reign the ruling party has not understood the importance of communication. Even as I type this I don’t know what the status of passports is.

Meanwhile, the 200 years’ celebration is supposed to kick off soon with the idea being this will be more one catalyst to rejuvenation and much needed unification. Whether that’s actually the case or not remains to be seen but I sincerely hope it will be. Even in spite of my discomfort at the notion that our nation is only at 200 years old, I’m always keen for a thing that unites us.

I am hopeful that this year will be kinder than the last. The last two years have been brutal, a little respite from brutality would be most welcome. Somebody told me life is what you make of it, and so I’ve decided I’m going to make this my year of fun. I’m going to participate in as many fun activities as I possibly Can. I don’t when or how but I seem to have lost my sense of adventure. I became boring and square. In the “think outside the box” adage, I became the box. That will cease to be the case in 24. More fun, and more adventure on the cards.

School going JK II and his new puppy promise to serve up lots of fun and adventure as well…
