Lesotho’s Teen queen shines on African stage

Hlompho Lebese has returned home beaming after a transformative experience representing Lesotho at the Miss Teen Africa competition in Egypt, where she also clinched the Miss Heritage title.

Sixteen-year old Hlompho Lebese described her journey during an interview with theReporter as ‘life-changing,’ filled with pride and a sense of responsibility as the sole representative from Lesotho.

Immersed in Egypt’s rich culture and the vibrant energy of the international pageant, Hlompho found herself among talented young women from across the continent.

A significant highlight for Hlompho was winning the Miss Heritage crown, a moment that underscored her mission to celebrate Lesotho’s roots and beauty.

She cherished the cultural exchange activities, the dazzling fashion shows, and the friendships forged with contestants from diverse African nations.

Navigating the competition as the only representative from Lesotho presented its challenges. Hlompho had to consciously step outside her comfort zone, finding her voice and standing tall even amidst nerves. Her unwavering motivation to represent her country propelled her forward.

Carrying Lesotho’s flag on the international stage was a deeply symbolic moment for Hlompho. It represented not just her personal journey but also the aspirations of young Basotho dreaming of making their mark.

Hlompho noted that the interaction with fellow contestants proved to be an enriching experience. She eagerly absorbed the diverse cultures, from West African dances to East African fashion, fostering a profound appreciation for the continent’s richness.

Throughout the competition, Hlompho proudly showcased Lesotho’s heritage through traditional attire and by sharing stories of its history, values, and the resilience of its people, particularly the strength of Basotho women and youth.

She said the feedback she received was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing genuine interest in learning more about Lesotho.

Now back home, Hlompho hopes her experience will ignite a spark in other young people in Lesotho, encouraging them to pursue their ambitions fearlessly.

“If I could stand on that international stage at 16, coming from a small country with a big heart, then so can they,” she affirmed.

Her perspective on inspiring others has evolved. Witnessing the power of representation firsthand, Hlompho now understands that even a single voice can create a significant impact. She plans to engage with young people through various platforms, sharing her story and advocating for their dreams.

Among the significant lessons learnt, Hlompho highlights the importance of self-belief, confident communication, and a deep appreciation for one’s roots.

The experience has fostered her personal growth, enhancing her independence, networking skills, and confidence as a young leader.

Looking ahead, Hlompho aspires to continue her involvement in pageantry, cultural initiatives, and youth empowerment, with a long-term goal of becoming an ambassador for youth development and African heritage. Her journey to Egypt has ignited a passion that she is eager to pursue further.

In conclusion, Hlompho expressed her deep gratitude for the opportunity and the unwavering support she received.

“Being Miss Heritage means carrying my country with love, and I promise to continue making Lesotho proud, wherever I go,” she added.
