Stay away from politics, PM tells NSS

‘Mantšali Phakoana

Prime minister Ntsokoane Matekane has called on the National Security Service (NSS) to disaffiliate itself from politics in order to do its functions effectively.

Matekane said this yesterday during the unveiling of the new M121, 404, 079 NSS headquarters building in Maseru.

He noted that with the new building, the organisation should increase efficiency in protecting and maintaining Lesotho’s statehood, sovereignty, and independence.

NSS officers should also work hard to fight cyber-crime and monitor false social media information that tarnishes the government’s image.

“I plead with you not to let political parties intervene with the internal affairs of the institution. You should also stay away from any criminal activities as your role is to protect this nation and property.

“This building was constructed to provide the NSS with the proper facilities it needs to effectively carry out its duties by protecting the nation and preventing crime before it occurs,” Matekane added.

For his part, NSS director general Pheello Ralenkoane welcomed the new building but indicated that other rooms still lacked electricity. However, he indicated that this would soon be resolved.

He commended the government saying this was the first time the NSS had its own building.
