Vodacom invests M500m in network revolution

Vodacom Lesotho has embarked on an ambitious journey, committing M500 million over three years to enhance its network and IT infrastructure.

This investment underscores the company’s dedication to fostering technological progress and socio-economic development in Lesotho.

With M155.6 million already invested in 2023/24 and M171.9 million allocated for 2024/25, Vodacom is poised to invest a further M169.5 million in the project’s final year, 2025/26.

Vodacom Lesotho chief technology officer Molupe Mothepu says the initiative is designed to broaden the company’s network reach and enhance service quality across Lesotho.

The project addresses unique challenges faced by diverse communities, ensuring a widespread and positive impact.

Construction of new cell sites in underserved areas is a cornerstone of this initiative, bridging the digital divide between urban and rural populations.

The project aims to provide essential communications services, educational resources, and economic opportunities to previously neglected regions.

The impact is transformative, fostering inclusion and unlocking economic potential. Moreover, the upgrade includes significant enhancements at existing sites to meet the growing demand for data services. Nine sites have been modernised with advanced technology, ensuring reliable service amid rising mobile internet usage.

Additionally, critical power upgrades and strategic optimisations have been implemented to bolster network performance. The integration of additional spectrum into the LTE network has expanded Vodacom’s coverage, enhancing data speeds and reliability.

The reactivation of eight sites has also strengthened the company’s 5G offerings, positioning Vodacom as a leader in high-speed connectivity.

Vodacom’s commitment extends beyond infrastructure; it includes robust cybersecurity measures and strategic partnerships aimed at accelerating the rollout of fiber optic networks.

Tšepo Ntaopane, the executive head of external affairs and regulatory, emphasized, “Connectivity can significantly improve lives, bridge the digital divide, and foster inclusive growth.”
