SECTION 2 calls for labour law amendment

Local lobby group, SECTION 2, has urged the Minister of Labour and Employment, Tšeliso Mokhosi, to amend the Labour Act Wages (Minimum Wages) Notice, 2025, to bring it into full alignment with the Labour Act, 2024.

In a statement yesterday mark Workers’ Day, the organisation also pleaded with Mokhosi to eliminate all discriminatory distinctions in paid maternity leave across sectors.

“Remove the unconstitutional limit on the number of times a woman can access maternity leave benefits.

“Open meaningful dialogue with trade unions, workers, and civil society to create a just and inclusive labour framework that reflects our constitutional values,” Section 2 noted.

Turning to workers, it said, “Your struggle is just. Your voice matters. Your rights are not negotiable. We stand with you today — and every day — as we push for a labour system that values people over profits, justice over convenience, and constitutional supremacy over ministerial discretion.”

Millions yesterday honoured the sweat, struggle, and sacrifices of working people across the globe.
