ETL upgrades digital networks

Telecommunications company, Econet Telecom Lesotho (ETL) has embarked on the Maseru radio access network and transport network upgrades project; a major technological milestone designed to elevate the digital experience for customers.

The initial phase of this project, which began in February 2025, has been successfully completed. ETL confirmed that it is now entering a critical stage of the project, with key milestones scheduled between 20 May and 30 July 2025. While minimal service disruptions may occur during this period, these developments mark the start of a phased rollout designed to significantly enhance mobile and internet connectivity across the country.

“This network transformation represents Econet’s unwavering commitment to building a smarter, faster, and more resilient digital future for Lesotho.

“We are not just upgrading equipment; we are empowering progress and strengthening the very foundation of digital connectivity in the Mountain Kingdom,” Econet Telecom Lesotho Chief Executive Officer, Dennis Plaatjies said in a press release.

He noted that the project includes replacing legacy radio systems with modern, high-performance units at key locations, reinforcing transport infrastructure, ensuring that the backbone of the network can support the ever-increasing demand for high-speed and reliable connectivity.

“We are taking all necessary precautions to avoid service disruptions and maintain business continuity for all users during the process.”

Key benefits include; enhanced transport infrastructure, expansion of Econet’s core network capacity, enabling faster data flow, improved routing, and support for advanced digital services across the country.

The project also entails improved 4G and 5G RAN – upgraded mobile network capabilities will reduce congestion, increase coverage, and deliver better quality experience for both voice and data on 4G and 5G technologies.

The upgrade will be executed site-by-site throughout Maseru, ensuring quality and stability at each location before moving to the next. This phased approach guarantees careful implementation and minimal impact on users.

“As we move forward, every customer, partner, and team member plays an essential role in realising this vision. Together, we are building a more connected Lesotho one that’s ready for the future,” Plaatjies added.

The upgrade is part of Econet’s broader transformation agenda a journey rooted in innovation, customer experience, and national development. With these efforts, Econet aims to future-proof its infrastructure, meet rising demand, and deliver digital services that match global standards across Lesotho.
