Metsi a Lesotho delivers first wave of WASH improvements

A year after the signing of the “Metsi a Lesotho” financing agreement – a collaboration between the European Union, UNICEF Lesotho, and the Government of Lesotho – the initiative has delivered its first tangible results, bringing essential water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services to local communities.

Since July 2024, the rural WASH component, implemented by UNICEF Lesotho with support from the EU, has been actively rolled out across all 10 districts. The initiative aims to reach 250 communities, 125 schools, and 15 health centers with improved WASH infrastructure.

A recent site visit to St Sebastian High School highlighted some of the progress made, including the installation of a new standpipe, latrines, and a handwashing station. In addition, five existing standpipes are being rehabilitated, and a new one has been constructed to further improve access to clean water.

Sebaretlane Primary School also unveiled new water and sanitation facilities, underscoring the project’s commitment to enhancing health, dignity, and quality of life for children and the broader community.

These developments mark a significant milestone in the collective effort to improve public health and promote sustainable development across Lesotho.
