The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition has issued a stern warning to individuals and businesses continuing to smuggle banned products, including eggs, cabbage, and potatoes, into the country, citing serious risks to local farmers and the national economy.
Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition during a press conference this week, the Minister of Social Development, Pitso Lesaoana expressed concernthat despite the government’s ban on importation of eggs, cabbage, and potatoes implemented earlier this year, some individuals are still smuggling these products into the country, undermining efforts to support local farmers and protect public health.
Lesaoana revealed that some smugglers are using unauthorised border crossings to bring in the banned products, while others are exploiting legitimate border posts, highlighting the need for increased vigilance and cooperation to prevent these illicit activities.
“We warn all those perpetrators that it won’t end well for those found engaging in such acts,”he cautioned, vowing to intensify efforts to detect and prosecute individuals involved in smuggling banned agricultural products.
Lesaoana further appealed to the smugglers, urging them to cease these illicit activities and instead support the country’s agricultural sector by promoting locally produced goods.
This would be a more beneficial and sustainable approach for all parties involved.
He assured that the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition was collaborating closely with other government agencies, border control authorities, and the police to closely monitor and enforce the ban on importing these products, ensuring that those who flout the law are held accountable.
“The Ministry is determined to work hand in hand with other stakeholders including security agencies to ensure that people abide and do the right thing and comply with the regulations,” he added.
