Prime Minister Samuel Matekane says the launch of ZMG Isuzu at Ha Thetsane in Maseru is a perfect example of how the private sector can contribute significantly to the economic well-being of the country.
The launch further exemplifies that the goal to build a diversified private sector led economy driven by a wide range of privately owned businesses and industries is not a futile exercise, he said.
Speaking at the launch yesterday, Matekane noted that the establishment of a dealership by Isuzu Motors which is an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) in Lesotho, presents a number of opportunities.
“It is my fervent hope that this is just the
first step in Isuzu’s automotive journey in Lesotho as great opportunities lie in the automotive components manufacturing factor” he said.
Matekane indicated that it is worth noting that ZMG Isuzu, through its dealer principal, is part of a committee working together with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Business Development in Lesotho, and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, to develop Lesotho’s Automotive Policy.
The policy will provide direction in the development of the country’s auto industry, including formalisation of the aftermarket and developing enabling legislation.
He added that efforts were underway to ensure Lesotho’s participation in leveraging on opportunities such as the Afrixembank Funding Facilities offered to Southern African countries.
