The Strategic Institute for Research and Dialogue (SIRD) from the National University of Lesotho will host a workshop tomorrow aimed at preventing violence in the 2028 general elections.
The full-day event will take place in Maseru. It is themed ‘Deepening Democracy in Lesotho: Preventing Violence Related to the 2028 General Election.’
According to the institute, the workshop will bring together stakeholders from government, civil society, academia, and international partners to develop practical strategies for promoting peaceful and credible elections.
“Violence related to elections has been a recurring concern in Lesotho. This initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen democratic governance and prevent conflict ahead of the 2028 polls,” SIRD said.
Some of the topics to be addressed include the role of IEC in prevention, management and resolution of election-related conflicts, reforms required to enhance the role of IEC ahead of the 2028 general elections, challenges faced by persons with disabilities during election related conflicts and the weaknesses of Lesotho’s party funding model.
