Apparel manufacturers, Jonsson Workwear has recruited a group of people living with various forms of disability in their factories.
In an interview with theReporter, the manufacturing director of Jonsson Workwear, Manie Gerber, said the company is aware of challenges facing such people and wants to help mitigate their plight.
“It was really an eye-opener to see so many people with disability enthusiastic for jobs. The number of applications has been unbelievable since we placed an advert,” Gerber said.
He noted that their aim is to start with one line producing T-shirts and manned by 12 operators.
The company will also employ additional personnel for absence coverage and quality control duties.
“We aim to employ at least 17 new recruits to begin with, but I am confident that this is only the start. The recruits will be trained in one of our facilities and upon the completion they will be placed when production commences,” Gerber stated.
He added that their normal process is to put all candidates through an aptitude and practical test so assess their potential.
The company also looks for the correct attitude and values to ensure that candidates help to achieve the firm’s objectives of quality and productivity.
“What it means is that we have taken another step towards getting even more involved in the community we have operated in over 20 years,” Gerber concluded.
