Youth show little interest in local elections

By Matṧeliso Phulane

The low turn out of young people, which was a trademark of yesterday’s local government elections, was also visible at Ha Thetsane.

However, those who showed up hailed the polls as an opportunity to elect people they trust to bring changes in their communities.

In an interview with theReporter, Khahliso Tjoloba who is in her 20’s said she believed her vote will make a difference to the youth in her community, such as job opportunities and schools.

“In most cases, I have noticed community councillors fail to do their work and carry out the responsibilities assigned to them, but rather want to benefit alone while neglecting the community.

“However, I believe that the person I voted for will make a change in my community,” Tjoloba said.

She added that advantage of local government is that councillors are people who are already known by the community as opposed to those from other places.

In an interview, the voting station manager at Thetsane High School polling station, ‘Matankiso Kokotela, observed that people are more interested in general elections than local government polls.

Kokotela said the voter turn out was very low and that those who turned up were mostly old people.
