Over 100,000 counterfeit cigarettes seized in Maseru

The Lesotho Revenue Services (RSL) recently confiscated 103,320 counterfeit cigarettes worth M413,280 from street vendors in Maseru city.

The organisation collaborated with the Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) during an initiative dubbed “Operation Osalama.”

The haul included popular brands such as Boss, Red and Black, and Chief, which have flooded the market at prices below M20.00 per pack.

The operation aimed to enforce compliance with tobacco importation regulations, as these counterfeit cigarettes had not been declared or subjected to necessary excise duties.

Their presence on the local market undermines legitimate businesses and also poses significant health risks to consumers who may be unaware of the dangers associated with unregulated products.

RSL officials emphasized the importance of combating the illegal tobacco trade for both economic and health reasons.

In a statement issued this week, the agency urged traders and individuals to avoid importing illicit goods into Lesotho, reinforcing the message that such actions will not be tolerated.

“The seized products will be destroyed, continuing RSL’s commitment to curbing non-compliance and ensuring a fair market for those who adhere to the law.

“This operation signals a robust response from authorities determined to protect consumers and uphold the integrity of the tobacco market in Lesotho,” the statement noted.
