US Embassy boosts community radio stations

The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA)-Lesotho, backed by the US Embassy, will host a two-day transformative workshop from tomorrow, to enhance editorial independence and democracy promotion in community radio stations.

This initiative aims to empower radio personnel with essential skills in editorial independence and democracy promotion.

The workshop will delve into the critical role of radio in fostering an informed society, enhancing accountability, and serving as a medium for civic education.

The effort is part of a broader project titled “Bridging the Information Gap,” which seeks to address information disparities in rural areas by bolstering the capacity of community radio stations. These stations, located in six of Lesotho’s 10 districts, will receive training on internal corporate governance, conflict management, and financial sustainability.

With a grant of USD 10,000 from the US Embassy in Maseru, this initiative underscores the importance of community radio as a tool for reliable information dissemination and civic engagement.

By empowering the stations, the project aims to significantly contribute to the development agendas of the communities they serve, ensuring that even the most remote areas are not left in the dark.
