Queen honours the elderly

Queen ‘Masenate Mohato Seeiso has given awards of appreciation to a group of senior citizens from across the country.

She presented the Platinum Awards at a ceremony held at the Royal Palace Gardens on Friday.

The event which was organised by a local event management company, Beyond Creatives, was aimed at honouring and celebrating senior citizens for their contributions to their communities.

It also sought to raise awareness on the significance of the 34th UN International Day for Older Persons in October.

In her remarks, Queen Seeiso highlighted the importance of protecting the elderly.

On behalf of UN Resident Coordinator, Amanda Khozi Mukwashi, Pepukai Chikukwa – UNAIDSCountry Director, noted that the event is meaningful as it aligns with the 34th Commemoration of the United Nations International Day of Older Persons.

“Today is a remarkable occasion – the Platinum Awards Ceremony where we celebrate and honour our senior citizens’ contributions, resilience, and enduring legacy.

“2024, as a Bicentennial year marking 200 years of Lesotho’s rich history, provides a good opportunity to honour those who have been the custodians of Basotho culture, values, and traditions. Senior citizens are the architects of our communities and the keepers of the wisdom that guides us into the future,” Chikukwa said.

Keoamang Hlalele (106) from Ha Thamae Maseru and Georgina Mohasi (104) from Mohale’s Hoekwere given trophies and some gifts.

The sponsors also donated food hampers to 10 other senior citizens from different districts. They also received trophies in recognition of their outstanding impact on their communities.
