Uniting for water

The minister of natural resources, Mohlomi Moleko, has emphasized the urgent need for cooperation in managing transboundary waters for a sustainable future.

Addressing the Water Sector Coordination Meeting in Maseru today, Moleko said water is essential for livelihoods and prosperity.

The resource transcends borders and cultures, making its management a collective responsibility, he noted.

Moleko acknowledged the challenges posed by climate change and urbanisation, which often lead to conflicts over shared water resources.

He also pointed out the opportunity for collaboration, urging countries to transform water from a source of tension into a catalyst for cooperation.

He stated that Lesotho is taking steps to join the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Convention on transboundary water cooperation.

Moleko also underscored the significance of international water law and the Revised SADC Protocol on Shared Water Courses, which encourage sustainable management and cooperation among member states.

He further called for strengthened partnerships among governments, civil society, and international organisations.

“Effective water management is crucial for environmental sustainability, economic stability, and social cohesion,” he added.
