Ministry bans egg imports

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition has banned the importation of table eggs starting from January 1, 2025, citing improved local production.

In a statement, the ministry’s principal secretary, Thabo Moleko, said the restriction is aimed atbolstering the local agricultural sector.

It follows sufficient supply of locally produced eggs, he noted.

The ministry’s announcement has been met with enthusiasm from local farmers, who see it as an opportunity to enhance their businesses while contributing to national food security.

In an interview with theReporter, a local egg producer, ‘Malebeoana Setlolela, expressed optimism about the new policy, stating, “This is a significant step towards supporting our industry and reducing reliance on imports.

“We are ready to meet the challenge and provide quality eggs to our communities,” Setlolela said.
