The US Embassy and the Lesotho National Federation of Organisations of the Disabled (LNFOD) this week celebrated achievements by professionals with disabilities and their efforts to foster dialogue for a more inclusive future in Lesotho.
The event, themed ‘Empowering Inclusion: Voices of Professionals with Disabilities’, was graced by key dignitaries including the acting U.S Embassy Chargé D’Affaires, Thomas Hines, and the minister of gender, youth, arts, culture and social development, Pitso Lesaoana.
In his opening address, Hines expressed the U.S’ unwavering commitment to advancing disability rights through global partnerships.
He cited the late U.S. President Jimmy Carter’s contributions to disability rights as a guiding light and emphasized the need for continued advocacy to dismantle barriers faced by individuals with disabilities.
“Inclusion is not merely an equity issue but a key element to sustainable development and economic progress. When we include everyone, we tap into the full potential of our societies,” Hines said.
He also highlighted legislative achievements such as the Americans with Disabilities Act, underscoring ongoing collaborative efforts with LNFOD to enhance global disability policies and programmes.
On his part, LNFOD Executive Director Nkhantsi Sefuthi highlighted the significant journey embarked on by disabled persons in Lesotho amidst challenges like inaccessible education and discriminatory hiring practices.
“Today marks an important moment as we celebrate the indomitable spirit and contributions of disabled individuals to our society,” Sefuthi noted.
Minister Lesaoana said the government has made significant strides towards inclusivity and the acknowledgment of diversity as a cornerstone for innovation and societal progress.
He commended the U.S. Embassy for its continued collaboration and echoed the need for sustained effort from all sectors of society to fulfil the vision of an inclusive Lesotho.
“To the professionals with disabilities here today, your achievements exemplify what is possible when societies invest in their people and create opportunities for all to excel. You are not just voices of inclusion – you are pioneers steering collective growth,” Lesaoana said.
The event spotlighted not only the achievements of individuals with disabilities but also paved a path forward, solidifying commitments from both local and international fronts towards fostering environments where everyone, regardless of ability, can thrive.
By acknowledging such triumphs and encouraging active dialogue, the event has inspired renewed efforts to elevate and incorporate voices of disabled professionals in every sphere.
