Senei punches above his weight

Famo musician Senei Makhalanyane, better known by his stage name ‘Sneiman,’ is making waves as part of ‘D2oamajoe,’ a new record label set to release the much-anticipated album Tṧepe Tape Vol. 4.

Born and raised in Maseru, Thaba-Bosiu, Makhalanyane is a multifaceted artist – musician, actor, lyricist, producer, and songwriter. His musical style is deeply influenced by legends like Sankomota and Bongo Maffin, embracing an authentic and ethical approach to music.

Beyond his music, Makhalanyane is known for his distinctive fashion sense – Brentwood pants and classy leather shoes – an homage to the early Southern African mine workers whose culture birthed the traditional Sesotho music genre, Famo. He refers to this modern interpretation of Sesotho fashion as ‘Sesotho sa moraorao’.

“I am a visionary who believes in setting trends,” Makhalanyane says. “That’s why I perform with a full band, including backing vocalists, a drummer, a keyboardist, a guitarist, and an accordionist.”

In 2020, he released his album Ha bo jeloe, which featured the award-winning South African rapper Big Zulu. Now, with Tṧepe Tape Vol. 4, he aims to celebrate the longevity and impact of the Tṧepe movement on Basotho music, fashion, and lifestyle.

“As the title suggests, Tṧepe Tape Vol. 4 is about celebrating the influence of Tṧepe music. We take pride in singing in our own language, wearing our traditional blankets, and rapping in the iconic marashea style – complete with Brentwood pants and Florsheim shoes. We are internationally recognised, and that is something to be proud of,” Makhalanyane says.

He explains that the Tṧepe Tape series has been an ongoing project aimed at empowering the entire movement. D2oamajoe serves as both a record label and an artistic platform where musicians can showcase their talents. Work on this latest album began in July last year and was completed in early August. However, the official release date is yet to be finalised.

“We are still finalising some paperwork, so we do not have an official release date yet. However, we will be dropping our first single as D2wamajoe very soon,” Makhalanyane reveals.

Looking ahead, D2oamajoe has ambitious plans, including the release of a solo album by Kommanda Obbs, which is already complete, as well as Sneiman’s next solo project, Maweekente, which is currently 80 percent finished. In total, the label has three major projects in the pipeline.

“We have been in the studio refining our craft, enhancing our signature sound. We don’t want to be predictable or follow trends. For those who appreciate authentic Sesotho music, these upcoming projects will be something to look forward to,” Makhalanyane adds.
