LLWDP II leads Hlotse upgrade

Following recent reports incorrectly attributing a sod-turning event in Tšehlanyane to the LHDA, the Lesotho Lowlands Water Development Project Phase II (LLWDP II) clarified that it spearheaded the initiative.

The LLWDP II, a Lesotho Government project co-funded by the EU, EIB, and World Bank, held the ceremony on April 9th to launch crucial upgrades to the Hlotse Adit infrastructure. This development, financed by the EIB to the tune of approximately M77.4 million, will enhance water flow from the Katse tunnel into the Hlotse River system, particularly during dry periods.

The project aims to improve water access and sanitation in Lesotho’s lowlands, specifically benefiting Hlotse and Maputsoe under World Bank funding. The upgrades include a larger pipeline and new electromechanical installations.

This initiative supports the broader “Metsi a Lesotho” vision, launched in 2024, focusing on sustainable water management for health and economic well-being.

The 12-month project, contracted to China International Water and Electric Corporation (CWE), is expected to be completed by March 2026, promising enhanced water availability for domestic, agricultural, and industrial use, while also maintaining environmental flows.
