MP boycotts National Assembly sitting

The leader of Hope party, ‘Machabana Lemphane-Letsie, yesterday staged a boycott of the National Assembly’s business, citing frustration over delayed consideration of her motion to amend Standing Order No 4. 

This order addresses attendance issues by parliament members, particularly those who frequently miss sittings.

The motion, filed six months ago, aims to empower the Speaker to deal with absent members. Lemphane-Letsie highlighted a recent incident where the House’s business was halted due to a lack of quorum, emphasising the need for her proposed amendment.

“I stand here with a bleeding heart,” Lemphane-Letsie stated, expressing her dissatisfaction with the disregard for the House’s leadership. She announced her boycott of the day’s business, citing disagreement with the House’s handling of her motion.

Speaker Tlohang Sekhamane cautioned Lemphane-Letsie against setting a bad precedent, labelling her actions “undemocratic.” Sekhamane explained that the delay in considering motions stems from limited staff and prioritisation of other issues.

He urged members to cooperate, promising to facilitate the passage of motions.

As chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee, Lemphane-Letsie has been actively involved in probing corruption and financial mismanagement. Her committee recently investigated the Lesotho Electricity Company (LEC) over alleged financial impropriety and is pushing for accountability.
