The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Nutrition, in collaboration with poultry farmers and other stakeholders, has taken significant steps to establish a new industry association.
Key developments were finalised on Saturday, paving the way for a more organised and regulated poultry sector in Lesotho.
A crucial document outlining the framework for the new association was drafted, aiming to oversee and guide the poultry industry’s growth. The organisation has been named the Lesotho Poultry Industry Association (LePIA).
An interim committee was appointed to spearhead the establishment of LePIA over the next three years. The committee’s leadership includes Kelebone Leisanyane as chairperson, Teboho Moekoa vice chairperson, Rethabile Mokaeane (secretary), and Alida Matsa (deputy secretary), among others.
Director of marketing, Lekhooe Makhakhe emphasized the importance of maintaining a balance of power within the committee and working towards establishing a robust and self-sufficient private sector entity.
Makhakhe said securing financial support would be crucial to avoid relying on personal or business funds and that consistent communication between the association and the Ministry would be essential for achieving success.
He noted that the establishment of LePIA marks the beginning of a new era for the poultry industry in Lesotho.
The new association will play a vital role in shaping the industry’s future, promoting cooperation among stakeholders, and addressing challenges facing poultry farmers.
With LePIA in place, the poultry industry in Lesotho is poised for growth and development, offering opportunities for farmers, business, and the economy as a whole, Makhakhe added.
