Lesotho celebrates World Ozone Day

The Ministry of Environment and Forestry, through the Lesotho Meteorological Services, on Saturday marked World Ozone Day in Maseru.

This year’s theme, ‘From Science to Global Action’, celebrates the significance of science and international collaboration in tackling environmental issues and ozone layer restoration.

The day also takes stock of process achieved under the Montreal Protocol, signed on September 16, 1987 to seek ways of protecting and preserving the Ozone layer.

Ministry of Environment and Forestry public relations officer, Lerato Loke, said the day was celebrated with various activities including drama competitions, poems, lithoko, and songs on Ozone layer protection.

“The Ozone layer is an important part of the atmosphere, without which life would not be possible. Its main function is to protect the planet from the sun’s damaging rays,” she explained.

Loke also noted that Ozone Day is normally commemorated worldwide on 16 September every year.
