Tshiamiso Trust launches second outreach

The Tshiamiso Trust has announced the second phase of its outreach programme for former minersworkers who suffered permanent lung damage as a result of contracting silicosis or work-related TB during their employment at South African gold mines.

During this outreach round, former Basotho mineworkers – including the families of deceased mineworkers, will be able to lodge claims, undergo Benefit Medical Examinations (BMEs), and receive support with the claims process.

To date, the Trust has paid nearly 10,000 Basotho claims, amounting to M930 million in compensation.

In its statement, Tshiamiso Trust indicated thatover the next few weeks, its team will travel to Qacha’s Nek, Thaba Tseka and Mokhotlong, before returning to Leribe, Maseru and Mafeteng to continue assisting claimants there.

Dr. Munyadziwa Kwinda, Chief Executive Officer of the Tshiamiso Trust, said having already paid out just under M1 billion to Basotho claimants, they look forward to assisting many more claimants through these efforts.

“With the support of government, ex-mineworkers’ associations, the media, and other stakeholders, coupled with on-the-ground awareness and mobilisation efforts throughout the villages, wewant to make sure that all potential claimants are given the opportunity to access compensation that they may qualify for,” he noted.
