Govt steps up emergency preparedness

The government is taking a significant step towards strengthening its health system with comprehensive Public Health Emergency Management (PHEM) training for senior executives.

The training that commenced on Monday and ends tomorrow aims to introduce and institutionalise PHEM within the national health system, enhancing the country’s ability to prevent, detect, and respond to public health emergencies.

The training will cover PHEM governance and policy alignment, equipping participants with the knowledge and skills to develop and implement effective emergency management policies.

Additionally, the technical-level operational training will focus on the operations and management of the Public Health Emergency Operations Centre (PHEOC), the nerve centrefor coordinating and managing public health emergencies in the country.

Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Health, ‘Maneo Ntene, says the PHEOC provides a platform where ministries, security services, disaster management authorities, laboratories, academia and development partners can work together in a coordinated manner.

“This training is expected to boost the capacity of health officials to manage and coordinate emergency responses,” she noted.
