The Lesotho Highlands Development Authority (LHDA) has named its second Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), ‘Leboborane-La-Monyokola-Thita’.
The name ‘Leboborane’ was influenced by the carpenter-bee, whose ability is to drill holes in trees and decks, making perfect, round holes that look like a tunnel. As the carpenter-bee drills, it makes loud buzzing sounds that grabs one’s attention just like the TBM.
Speaking at the Polihali TBM launch ceremony yesterday, the Minister of Natural Resources Mohlomi Moleko, said the name was invented by ‘Malira Chefa from St Paul’s High School in Botha-Bothe. Chefa walked away with M12 500 during a naming competition while the school received M37 500.
Fikile Mpopo from St Catherines High School who came up with the name ‘Leboborane la Loti’ won M7500 while the school got M22 500. Third-placed Karabo Selebalo who invented the name ‘Makoanyane oa Lithaba’ received M5000 and her school, Holy Family, got M50 000.
